We could have had an interesting city railway...
Alas the Northern Beaches, Southern Suburbs and Western Suburbs lines never got built! And the Eastern Suburbs Line is half its original length, and follows a different alignment via Martin Place.
Infrastructure for all these projects were provisionally provided in the 1930s too...
- Town Hall platforms 4 and 5 were originally for the Eastern/Western suburbs line...now they're for the revised Eastern Suburbs Railway
- Wynyard platforms 1 and 2 were originally for the Northern Beaches line...now they're a carpark
- St James has disused tunnels (under Hyde Park) ready for the Eastern suburbs line...now they're full of water
- North of North Sydney station are tunnel stubs primed to branch off towards Mosman and the Northern Beaches...they're still there
- Central platforms 26 and 27 were available for the Southern Suburbs line...they're still there and could be used for the new CBD Rail Line
Ahhh Sydney is an interesting place...
