Wow an email from the boss?

Something that arrived in the email today...

[copy+paste...]

Dear Jonathan,

15 March 2007

Dear passengers

Let me apologise to those of you delayed due to last night’s incident where a train was caught in the overhead wiring between Milsons Point and Wynyard.

The situation was made worse when other parts of the line lost power, affecting more trains and more passengers.

Our investigation into last night’s incident is focused on the probable failure of the train’s pantograph on the eighth carriage of the train.

We have received many complaints about the adequacy of passenger information provided to you during last night’s disruption.

This issue will be thoroughly reviewed to provide you with better customer service.

Please accept my apologies.

Vince Graham

RailCorp CEO

And I wasn't anywhere near a train last night...!

eh, I was one of those caught by the disruption.

Left work at 5:40pm (what a time to leave!) but I got home around 8pm so I only really lost an hour.

The funny thing was when I was at parramatta station, everyone was waiting for the trains to come - we were directed to platform 4, and for 15mins the announcements blared that our train was coming on platform 4. Then about 2 minutes before the train comes, a train from the blacktown direction comes along, stops at platform 3, and an announcement starts saying that that train was going back to westmead - seven hills, etc. But because everyone saw it come from the blacktown direction, no one believed that it'd actually go back the other way!

So at the end, almost everyone caught the train from platform 4 (and platform 2 that subsequently also came from the city direction), and they were all sardinated, and i caught the one from platform 3 which was largely empty (cause I didn't want to be squished)! And it wasn't all stations, so I don't think people on the other train were very happy seeing my train run past them

fayfay: yeah totally out of the blue!

chandrew: ahhh cool! you got to be part of the fun!!! hehe thanks for your recap! =D

and YES! there is a set of trailing points (Points #725) at the country end of Parramatta station platform 3. This allows trains to terminate on platform 3 and head back onto the "Down main" track (the platform 4 track).

ahhhh guess not many people are aware of this little piece of infrastructure so yeah...

ooo, i'll need to remember that, next time something goes wrong! is it used that often? cause i've never seen it happen before

There will be at least one train using it each day to do a 'rail clean'.

But often it will be a non-passenger train and usually the train will perform the movement either very early in the morning or very late at night.
