WOW! RailCorp news

This was written by Vince Graham (CEO RailCorp) in his weekly bulletin to RailCorp staff.

Defibrillators: mending broken hearts

Many of you will be aware that five defibrillators, capable of restarting a patient’s heart, have been installed at Central, Wynyard, Town Hall and Strathfield stations. Fifty CityRail staff have been trained to use the machine in emergencies – 20 at Central and 10 in each of the other stations.

These stations have been chosen for the trial because they are the most difficult for paramedics to access. Medical research shows that for every minute lost, the patient has a 10% less chance of surviving so helping the patient quickly is critical.

We are trialling the defibrillators as part of an agreement with St John Ambulance and we expect to roll-out the program across 40 stations and then into the country rail network.Having defibrillators on site and staff on-hand trained to use them means defibrillation can be administered within five to six minutes, greatly increasing a person’s chance of survival.

This is another great initiative which will make our network safer for passengers and staff.

YAY! Strathfield Station has a defibrillator!
