why is it needed? don't we have enough trains/trams/buses/etc. around the CBD area already? seems silly to me that they're still not addressing the fact that the hills area is the fastest growing area and still doesn't have suitable transport! (though I must say the buses are pretty good these days, albeit expensive)
meneng: with epping-chatswood, the noise issue is because of the way the tunnel has been constructed: it's a single-bore tunnel and completely concrete (i.e. no sleepers/ballast under the track).
they'll be running newer trains on the line as a temporary solution =P
chandrew: well, we'll need to see what happens on november 11 with the mini-budget to see what happens with rail to the North-West...
but i agree the NW really needs transport...
------------------------------ in some ways, this new line is good IF (and only if) it's the first stage of something bigger. it will create much-needed extra capacity in the CBD, and if it runs well, it might be the start of something really good for Sydney.
if all that ever gets built is this 7km line, then the line's probably useless.
BUT...then again, NSW Labor has a very poor record of delivering infrastructure. so who knows if it will ever get built =\
true, never know if it will happen - i was very impressed by their NW metro website when they first put it up, but it was so flashy it was shouting out that it probably wouldn't get built. Hopefully capacity will be increased at Town Hall while they're building that so we don't feel like we're falling off the platform!
the map gives the impression that they will be using a reserved CBD rail alignment called "Metro Pitt" (which was originally going to be used for the CBD/Redfern-Chatswood Rail Link =P), and so the station at Town Hall would actually be in the vicinity of Pitt and Park Street (and not under George Street, which is where the current station is)

and what's the deal with epping to chatswood line...my friend told me they've stuffed up cause it's too noisy running the new trains?
